Elena achieved one of her dreams in tennis today as she became the first Russian woman to win the gold medal at the Olympics by defeating Dinara Safina of Russia in the final 3-6 7-5 6-3.  Congratulations Elena!  In fact Russia took a clean sweep of the medals as Vera Zvonareva took the bronze medal.

Elena said this after her historic achievement: "I never expected a medal — gold, silver or bronze It's unbelievable. For me this is the best moment in my career. I'll never forget it."

Elena add this medal to her silver medal that she won in Sydney 8 years ago.
